After A Tornado...Tornadoes not only destroy the environment but they can have a very big impact on the victims lives and how the community is going to start up again. It can take a week to a year to actually clean up after a tornado but fixing electrical objects and financial troubles can definitely take more than a year. The day after a tornado can be extremely tough when the victims that survived through the tornado come out to see all the damage that has taken place. It can be tough to see what has happened and how to fix everything at first.
Cleaning up the debris can take quite a long time and many injuries usually occur after a tornado believe it or not. As a study of injuries after a tornado in Marion, Illinois, showed that 50 percent of the tornado-related injuries were during rescue attempts and clean-ups. Tornadoes or any natural weather hazard can also impact peoples minds and give people depression and anxiety. Be very aware of children as they may not be sure of what has just happened and they could be scared that it may come back again and they will be left alone without their family. Make sure they are talked through what has happened so that they understand and don't go through anxiety because children often hide their problems which could continue to get worse. People also get very scared of how they are going to start their life up again. Financial issues will be a very big part of this; building up a new home, finding a job that was not in a building that was damaged, providing the necessary needs for the family before everything gets back on track which could take up to a year. Considering all these after-affects of a tornado and how many tornadoes occur in a year, 1000 on average, it is a big devastation. |
The Survival PlanWhere do you go during a Tornado?
If you are at school during a tornado, your school should have a plan however try to go under really heavy furniture, not a school chair, or go out into the hallway. Make sure you are near no windows and sit down with your hands over your head and really all you can do is wait. I know it very scary but you don't really want to be going running around outside. If you are at home again try to find a really heavy piece of furniture and get under it. The safest place would be a basement, because you are underground. If you do not have a basement go to a closet or a very small room in your house that has no windows and is on the lowest floor in the centre of the house. What do you do when a Tornado is nearby? Don't freak out. That will probably be the first thing any person would do when they see a tornado and that is very understandable but if you calm yourself you have a better chance of surviving through the tornado when you are thinking straight. If you are not an adult make sure you let an adult know you see a tornado nearby. If you are home alone and the tornado is not near, you can risk going to your neighbours and hiding with them, however going outside is one of the worse things to do when a tornado is nearby. Prepare for a tornado by creating a kit with warm clothes and a blanket to protect yourself and hiding yourself from the warm and to keep you tight. If you are in a car, get out of the car and go hide in a nearby building, following the same rules as hiding in a house, or go into a ditch and cover yourself up. If you are not sure if you see a tornado or what to do, the community should be reporting any news on the tornado through the radio or television news channel. Sometimes different places have emergency sirens indicating there is a tornado. |
